Resource Description
How the laptop, its operating systems, hardware, and built-in sites work.

#The Laptop
The laptop is a custom 13 inch prop with a lid that opens and shuts for every player nearby. Players take it out with the laptop item and hold it open in their hands, or put it down on a table, counter, or floor within reach. The OS runs on the laptop's own screen in the world, and the camera zooms onto it while the player uses it.
A laptop put down stays where it stands, through disconnects and restarts, until someone picks it up. Anyone can use it; the account's password is what keeps it safe. Nearby players see a simple copy of its screen: the boot and lock screens, or the open windows as outlines with their app names and the site in the browser, never the page itself or anything typed.
A laptop stays on like a real one that sleeps. Closed, put away, through a relog or a server restart, it wakes on its lock screen with the windows and browser tabs it had. See Using the Laptop.
#Operating Systems
| OS | Modelled on | Boots from |
|---|---|---|
| Facade 11 Pro | Windows | The drive. New laptops come with it. |
| Lumen | Ubuntu | The drive, once installed from its USB stick. |
| Solace | macOS | The drive, once installed from its USB stick. |
| Veil | Tails | A USB stick, live. It never touches the drive. |
Each has its own boot, setup, and lock screens, menus, windows, notifications, and settings. Facade, Lumen, and Solace accounts sit behind hashed passwords and sync through Nimbus, a cloud account that belongs to the character. Drives can have several users, a Guest account, and sign-in for other players' Nimbus accounts, as a business computer needs.
An app store on the desktop installs and removes apps, other resources' apps included. See Operating Systems.
#Ownership & Theft
Every laptop can have an owner, a character, which other resources read through the exports. Owners release a laptop before selling it, or mark it reported stolen. Crowbar, a recovery toolkit on a USB stick, reads a stolen laptop's drive and cracks its password over time. How much it finds depends on the OS. See Ownership & Recovery.
#Hardware
Each laptop holds a mainboard with its cooler, two memory sockets, an SSD, a Wi-Fi card, and a battery. Every part is an inventory item with its own model, serial, and condition. Parts set how fast the OS runs, how far hotspots reach, and how long the battery lasts. Fans clog, paste dries, SSDs wear out, and batteries lose health.
Players open a placed laptop in the service view to swap parts, blow the fan out, and re-paste the processor. See Hardware & Servicing.
#Ports & Devices
The laptop has two USB-C ports, an HDMI port, a USB-A port, and an audio jack. Players plug in data sticks for their files, boot and installer sticks, an HDMI cable for casting, and a power bank that keeps a held laptop running. Every nearby player sees what is plugged in. Other resources add their own devices. See Ports & Devices.
#Wi-Fi & Browsing
Hotspots sit at real places on the map, many behind passwords handed out in roleplay, and the player's phone tethers anywhere. The server knows which network each laptop is online through, so other resources can trace players to the café they used.
Each OS has its own browser. Clearnet sites open directly or through a one-click VPN, and onion sites need the Onion network. Visits to monitored sites leave traces that depend on that protection. See Wi-Fi & Browsing.
#Built-In Apps & Sites
| Name | What it is |
|---|---|
| Natter | A WhatsApp-style messenger keyed by the character's phone number. |
| Shroud | An anonymous dark web chat with handles, rooms, and contacts other resources script. |
| Rollhaus | An online casino with provably fair originals, PvP games, live tables, cases, and case battles. It can be turned off. |
| Hireline | A job board where businesses post listings and players apply and book interviews. |
| Office apps | Terminal, text editor, files, calculator, image viewer, Paint, and Slides, under each OS's own names. |
Example sites for Los Santos Customs, an LSPD academy application, Snake, and 2048 show what other resources can add. See Messaging, Casino, Job Board, and Example Sites.
#Casting
Apps cast a window to TVs, monitors, and projector screens in the world, over an HDMI cable or wirelessly. Every nearby player sees it sharp at any distance. Slides adds a laser pointer and a live pen for presentations. Admins place screens in game. See Casting.
#Shop
Digital Den sells laptops, parts, tools, and accessories in a studio that shows each offer on the counter. Players pick a finish and a backplate for a new laptop, or refinish the one they carry. Laptops on show stand in the showroom with a spec sign beside each. Staff shelves and door locks belong to the digitalden job. See Shop.
#Desktop Computers
A desktop computer runs every OS a laptop does and stays where it is set up. It runs on mains power, so it never needs charging and its parts never wear. Businesses can give each employee their own account on it. See Using the Laptop.
#Integrations
Other resources register apps and sites with their own NUI pages, Shroud contacts such as dealers, Natter businesses, and port devices. Server exports give and read laptops and parts, track placed laptops by serial, read traces and ownership, and adjust casino credits. Server events report placement, purchases, parts, networks, and messages. Hooks in unencrypted files limit who may do what. See Exports & Events.
Every action is server-authoritative, and the resource ships in 17 languages.
